Summerhill Village is a social housing cooperative in West Footscray, built on land gifted to the Lions Club of Victoria by the local council, replacing 25 units built by volunteers in the 1960s. TANDEM design studio arranged 49 one and two-bedroom apartments, over two and three levels, with a central courtyard inspired by the integrated feel of traditional European housing blocks. The village offers facilities for older women to live independently while enjoying the benefits of community living.
Extended payback periods on housing of this kind, generally 35 to 40 years, make durable and cost‑effective construction essential. TANDEM responded with a concrete superstructure, a robust brick base and lightweight cladding to the upper levels. LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® in COLORBOND® steel Surfmist®, Dover White® and Cottage Green® helps reduce long‑term maintenance for the clients, and the profile offers a subtle contextual reference to the older houses along the street.
