Larnangurrak, meaning Our Place, is the Dja Dja Wurrung corporate and community centre at Golden Square. Y2 Architecture collaborated with the Dja Dja Wurrung Corporation and community to create a culturally rich site. Ongoing Wartaka sessions, meetings of importance, provided a culturally safe space and fostered grassroots ownership. Its CEO, Rodney Carter, describes the centre as a place to work together to create a future for Central Victorians that would make all of their Dja Dja Wurrung Ancestors proud.
The angular, undulating shape of the building is achieved through LYSAGHT KLIP-LOK® and LONGLINE 305® steel cladding, an abstract representation of the rock formations important to the Dja Dja Wurrung people. The way shadows and light play across the metallic surface reflects the constantly changing landscape. The colour tones correspond with the ochre found in Dja Dja Wurrung Country and reflect the cultural and ceremonial importance of earth pigments.
