The extension of Nido Early School in Hawthorn East keeps its distance from a street heritage facade, its presence never overstated. A mosaic motif emulating heritage stained glass clads the new entry. Vantage Architecture rotated the plan based geometry of the front wing into elevation and extruded it to form the hallmark entry piazza, then rotated the same curves and dimensions again to form a reduced height rear section for the two rear classrooms facing west.
The project uses LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB® and KLIP-LOK®. Keen attention was paid to the detailing of key focal points. External canopies lined with blackbutt timber overlap the window frames, giving a smooth frameless transition from the outside into the building, and concealed U channels sit behind the main entry canopy faces, draining directly to in ground trench grates rather than being flashed and guttered.
